Your Field Guide to Animated GIFs in Email

ICYMI, we’re huge fans of using interactive content in email. Whether you’re trying to improve your campaign, tell a story, or simply add a bit of flair to the inbox, interactive content is the way to go.

And one of the easiest ways to do so is by adding animated GIFs to your emails.

19bb4925171a5127e7859ddc7773daf8

“GIFs are a great way to engage your audience with interesting, eye-catching content,” says Jay Moore, AWeber’s Educational Video Specialist. “At the same time, they’re easy to create and allow you to show off your product, concept or idea.”

There’s pretty legit research to back our love of GIFs: Marketing Sherpa data reveals that the use of GIFs in email can increase click thru rates by 42 percent, conversion rates by 103 percent, and revenue rates by 104 percent.

Let’s take a look as to why GIFs are so effective and how you can use them in your own campaigns.

What’s a GIF?

GIF is short for Graphics Interchange Format. It’s a popular image format that’s been around since the 80’s. A GIF uses a series of images to create the illusion of motion (sort of like a flipbook). Before web-hosted video, GIFs were used to add animation to a webpage.

677f88935740ca289d64c7de36eea0b1

And since all trends come back around, we’re seeing a resurgence in the use of GIFs. From Twitter to Buzzfeed, you can’t go more than five minutes without seeing one in your feed.

The pronounciation of GIF remains the internet’s greatest mystery. 76 percent of our team says it with a hard-g (like good, golf, grape). Others say it’s soft (like the popular brand of peanut butter).

Regardless of how you say it, one thing’s for sure: we all ðŸ’• GIFs.

Get Inspired

“GIFs add personality to your emails,” says Scott Richardson, Motion Graphic Designer at AWeber. “You can show a specific thing, a product demo. There are so many practical purposes for using a GIF.”

Let’s take a look at some ways that brands are using GIFs in their marketing emails (and how you can steal those ideas for your next campaign):

To Illustrate a Product

GIFs don’t have to be all for show. They’re actually a great way to tell a story in a simple, impactful way.

Check out how we used a GIF to support the launch of our new mobile app, Curate:

curate-gif

Rather than relying on heavy copy, this animated GIF gives subscribers a sneak peek in seconds.

Pro Tip: GIFs are great for illustrating complex ideas in a simple way. Give subscribers a sneak peek of your latest product launch or to share a unique use case.

Feeling daring? Try using a series of GIFs to give a step-by-step tutorial.

To Create Intrigue

Want a great way to entice your readers? Take a cue from this Kate Spade campaign:

0dab193289fa3b12fd65ef7f6b5cac66

The animation adds another level of intrigue to the email, prompting subscribers to click through to see what’s inside.

Pro Tip: Sometimes the simplest bit of animation can have a big impact. The next time you’re looking to add some oomph to your emails, try adding a GIF to the mix.

To Add a Sense of Urgency

GIFs can be a great alternative for traditional countdown clocks to emphasize urgency in your messaging:

4619bfdbca8a073fc4f4f8bb2f1d17d7

This example from LOFT shows how a little animation can make a bold statement.

Pro Tip: Your email doesn’t have to imitate the Vegas strip at 2am. Adding a little bit of movement is sometimes all you need.

“Aim for delightful, not obnoxious,” says Scott.

Or to Simply Delight

GIFs can be added to add fun and excitement for your emails, like this one from charity: water:

c1aa2300c8da9b9b33ab604ae22f6b61

Their smart use of a GIF showcases the personality and people behind the brand.

But be mindful of context when using GIFs in your emails. Does it feel appropriate and strengthen the message you’re trying to send? Or does it take away from it? These are good questions to ask yourself before you hit ‘send’.

Pro Tip: “Use GIFs sparingly. If you’re using them just because, it can get old,” says Scott. “If it’s something people don’t expect from you, it will have a more powerful effect. Don’t get greedy with the GIFs.”

How to Create a GIF

“There are so many tools out there that take away the technical headaches around creating GIFs,” says Scott. “There’s no reason to hesitate. It’s such a low-risk endeavor.”

Here’s an in-depth tutorial from HubSpot on creating GIFs in Photoshop, or you can create them out of video footage you already have using a tool like GIF BreweryGIFMaker.me or Instagiffer.*

“GIFs are easier to create than a video, especially if you’re trying to illustrate something short and to the point,” says Jay. “The skill level bar is a lot shorter with a GIF.”

And don’t think that you have to be a designer or know how to code to use GIFs in your emails. We love sites like Giphy or r/gif for their large selection of ready-to-use GIFs.

*The Fine Print

It’s important to note that not all email clients play well with GIFs. If you’re using a service like Microsoft Outlook, you might notice compatibility issues that only let the first frame of the GIF display. To accommodate for this, always make sure that first frame can work as a standalone.

Ready to GIF?

Now that you know how to use them effectively, GIFs can be a great way to elevate your email content. If you’re promoting a product or service, they can really emphasize a use case and serve as an educational tool. (Or simply delight your subscribers.)

Are you using GIFs in your emails? How have they impacted your stats? How do you pronounce it? Let us know in the comments or send us a tweet.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Email Campaigns for Nonprofits | Part 3 of 4

Last week we covered our the relationship between you, the nonprofit, and your donors. This week we’ll examine the fundamentals of fundraising and the best emails to send to get your donors to take action.

In this four-part guide you’ll find do’s and don’ts for every step of the email marketing process:

Do: Send emails as fundraising tools to new subscribers and loyal donors.
Don’t: Be overly pushy.

Here are some examples of emails you can send to help bring in donations in a non-aggressive way.

1. Success story

Leverage the power of your success to collect donations. Donors want to know how their money will help, so you need to show them. In your email, tell a specific story of how your organization helped in a given situation. Include pictures with the story and a call to action that asks donors to support the specific campaign.

2. ‘We have a goal’ email

If you have a fundraising goal, share it with your donors. Create a series of emails that center around your goal. The first should state the goal and ask donors to contribute. The next should offer an update, for example, to announce that you’re halfway to meeting your goal. The third email should notify donors that you’re closing in on the goal deadline. The email should be urgent, asking donors to send support before the time runs out.

3. Fundraising event email

Email is one of the best marketing tools for a fundraising event. As the planning goes on, keep your guests updated with a series of emails. Start with an invitation that includes all the information they need and a call to action allowing guests to RSVP.

Additional follow-up emails can be sent to those who have yet to RSVP. You can also send an email that recaps last year’s success and sets this year’s expectations. After the event, thank everyone who came and share the amount that was raised.

Ready to dive into our final do’s and don’ts? Stay tuned next week for Part 4 of our series: The Do’s and Don’ts of Email Campaigns for Nonprofits | How to maintain your donor list.

Use this guide to engage and connect with your subscribers and you’ll be growing your donor base in no time. Try out these tips to see where they take you and check out the VerticalResponse free program for nonprofits

How to Develop Tone of Voice to Connect with Your Email Audience

“People don’t always remember what you say or even what you do, but they always remember how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

What you say is powerful, but how you say it leaves lasting impact.

Imagine how the verbiage would be noticeably different in an email about financial investments compared to an email about a doggy daycare.  No matter what kind of business you have, tone of voice helps you connect with your audience.

Tone as a way of personification

Tone and voice are two entirely different things but when you put them together effectively, they can equal money in your pocket.

So what’s the difference?

Voice is the mission, or persona. An example of this could be expressive.

Tone is delivery of the mission. Expressive tone is descriptive, flowery and emotional.

Humanizing your brand makes business seem less forced. A natural technique to writing is in tailoring your work for one person, not 100.

Crafting words is an art form so tailoring them to fit the needs of your audience is crucial. The more engaged your readers are, the more they will want to learn and buy from you.

When tone of voice is right, readers will see value in your products and services.

How to establish your tone

Let’s assume you haven’t developed a tone, or maybe you need help strengthening it. The first thing to do is ask questions. Why are you writing this email? What message are you trying to deliver? How do you it want it to be perceived? What action do you want your readers to take after reading your email? Narrowing in on your purpose will enhance the message and bolster your writing etiquette.

Second, what are some adjectives to describe the culture of business? Also, take into account your company’s set of values. These principles will act as the foundation and help shape the tone you are looking for.

Third, think outside the box and don’t underestimate the power of creativity!

When all of these factors come together it will drive your readers to action!

Although there are many tones that exist in email marketing, here are a few approaches to tone that will help get the creative juices flowing.

Informal

Spirited writing style that makes the brand seem more like a friend than an intimidating corporation

Who uses it: Companies that want to develop a friendly and fun persona

Example: Enchanting Marketing

Why it works: It’s playful, yet informative. Just because your style is passionate doesn’t mean it’s unprofessional. If it’s appropriate, go with it.

Promotional

Highly visual content that uses sales verbiage appealing to all consumer personalities

Who uses it: Retail, restaurants, events

Example: Sheetz

Why it works: “Baby Got Bitez!” in the subject line certainly grabbed my attention and the large words and images inside are engaging with limited distractions. An authentic blend of copy and images in a promotional emails like this is crucial.

Formal

More complex writing style and sentence structure that shows a limited range of emotion

Who uses it: Legal, financial, scientific, medical, higher education

Example: LinkedIn

Why it works: It’s professional and gets right to the point without the use of colorful language. LinkedIn acknowledged a serious mistake and used a formal tone to address it. Not only is it consistent with the brand’s reputable personality, but it is to be expected of a professional social media platform. To distinguish themselves from Facebook, Twitter, and other similar networks, a professional tone of voice is essential.

Conversational

Typically written in first person and can be used as a way of storytelling

Who uses it: Businesses looking to add a personal spin on their content

Example: Ann Handley’s Blog

Why it works: This casual “conversation with a friend” style of writing creates a cozy environment to connect with readers on a more intimate level.

Now that you’re a tone pro, remember to stay consistent. Your readers subscribed to your email list because of what they already know, and you don’t want to tarnish  the brand by  changing up your tone of voice.

Wait! Before clicking send:

  • Does your content have rhythm?
  • Does it not only capture your audience’s attention but keep them engaged?
  • Does it have a clear call to action?
  • Does it match the criteria above?
  • Is it consistent with your company persona or brand?
  • Is it free of spelling and grammar errors?

If yes, then go ahead. Hit send! 🙂

What tone most appeals to you?

Which tone of voice clicks most with your style? How did you find your tone of voice?

The Do’s and Don’ts of Email Campaigns for Nonprofits | Part 2 of 4

Last week we covered our general tips for crafting successful email campaigns for nonprofits. This week we’ll examine the relationship between you, the nonprofit, and your donors.

In this four-part guide you’ll find do’s and don’ts for every step of the email marketing process:

  • Three tips for successful emails. (Part 1)
  • Three emails you should send to new donors before asking for money. (Part 2)
  • Three emails you should send to ask for donations. (Part 3)
  • Three emails you should send to maintain your donor list. (Part 4)

Do: Send ‘get to know you’ emails before asking for money.
Don’t: Ask for donations before you’ve established a relationship.

New donors are important to your financial future, but that doesn’t mean you can bombard them with donation requests as soon as they’re on your email list. Just like any relationship, there should be a ‘get to know you’ period.

To help you establish a relationship, here are three emails you should send before asking for a donation outright:

1. Welcome email

When you add a donor to your list, treat them like a VIP. Within 48 hours of adding a contact, they should receive a welcome email. With VerticalResponse, you can use the automated feature to schedule a welcome email as soon as a new contact is added.

Offer a friendly greeting and thank the recipient for signing up. Explain the benefits of being on your email list and lead the reader to more information, such as the history of your organization or FAQ section of your website. This is definitely not the time to solicit a donation. Simply establish a connection and the rest will come later.

2. ‘Did You Know?’ email

After you welcome the potential donor, send an email that offers information they might not know. Share information that might not be common knowledge, perhaps about how many people your organization helps each year or which services you provide.

The point of this email is simply to educate new subscribers. This is just the next step toward building your relationship with the donor.

3. Exclusive email offer for new subscribers

Make new subscribers feel even more special by offering an exclusive deal. This could be a tour of your facility, branded swag, or an invitation to your upcoming fundraising event. Be sure to explain that only new subscribers have access to this deal.

Now that you’ve cultivated an email friendship, you can start asking for donations. Stay tuned next week for Part 3 of our series: The Do’s and Don’ts of Email Campaigns for Nonprofits | Fundraising email fundamentals.

Use this guide to engage and connect with your subscribers and you’ll be growing your donor base in no time. Try out these tips to see where they take you and check out the VerticalResponse free program for nonprofits
