From Zero to Success: Building an Email List From Scratch

Email is a critical piece of any small business’ marketing strategy, but building an effective email list can be daunting. Whether you’re just starting out in business, have been operating for a while but have not yet ventured into email marketing, or are just unhappy with the results your current email list is getting, take heart! It is possible to go from zero to success in the world of email marketing, and create a list that will help you market your products and services to exactly the people who want to buy them.

Why email marketing?

Email is a dominant form of marketing, and multiple studies suggest it’s more effective than virtually any other type, including direct mail, traditional advertising, digital advertising, and even social media. Gigaom Research calls email marketing the “digital workhorse,” and found more than half the marketers they surveyed viewed email marketing as the most effective marketing tactic.

Why is email marketing so great? First, it’s very easy, fast, and low-cost (often no-cost) to do. Even marketing newbies can stage successful email campaigns, especially if they’re using a service that automates the creation, design, mailing, and metrics measurements of an email campaign.

What’s more, virtually everyone in America is online all the time thanks in no small part to increased smartphone use. Even better, Hubspot reports that 50 percent of consumers say they read all their emails!

You don’t have to be a marketing pro to achieve great results with email marketing, but you do have to start off with a very good list. Here are some sure-fire strategies for building a list that will work for your small business:

  1. Create an easy-to-find, easy-to-use email signup page on your website. Your website is an essential tool for informing your customers about your business, but it’s also one of the easiest ways to begin building an email list. Your subscribe page should be simple, easy to find from the home page, and briefly tell users what they’re signing up for — your company newsletter, periodic announcements of specials and deals, your recipe-a-week club, etc. Include the link to your signup form in your business’ email signature.
  2. Gather emails in person. If you have a storefront or you regularly interact with customers in an office setting, you can solicit emails directly from the customer. It’s as easy as setting out a good old signup sheet where people can write down their emails, or you can be higher tech by displaying a tablet that customers can use to sign up on your website. You can also collect emails when you participate in community events, expos, trade shows, or anywhere else your brand comes in contact with customers in the real world. Finally, when you speak with customers on the phone, ask if they would like to provide an email for your list.
  3. Leverage social media to grow your email list. If you’ve connected with consumers through social media, you’ve already captured their attention and positive energy, so they’re predisposed to share their email address with you. You can offer a signup portal through your Facebook or LinkedIn pages, or use Twitter lead-generation cards.
  4. Incentivize everyone to provide email addresses. Offering consumers a reward for providing their email addresses (access to special discounts, free points in your loyalty program, etc.) isn’t the only way to incentivize the email-collection process. You can also reward employees for successfully gathering valid email addresses for your list. Reward customers who refer others to sign up for your list, and include “forward-to-a-friend” links in all your emails.
  5. Leverage every piece of paper your business produces and shares with customers. Yes, it’s an increasingly digitized world and you’re trying to build an email list, but don’t miss out on the opportunity offered by unavoidable pieces of paper, like customer receipts and invoices, direct mail pieces, and even your company business cards and letterhead. Include a brief call to action on everything in order to encourage people to sign up for your email list.
  6. Give bouncebacks one more go. No matter how good you think your email list is, inevitably you’ll send to some email addresses that aren’t valid — and you’ll get a bounceback notice from your email server. If those incorrect emails are tied to an actual customer account, send a postcard asking them to update their email address with you and offer a reward for doing so.
  7. Don’t let website visitors go without a plea. When a user is ready to navigate away from your site without having signed up for your email list, you can make a last-ditch effort by having a pop-up window appear that asks them to enroll before they go.
  8. Gamify email gathering. Gamification is the next hot thing in loyalty rewards programs, and you can also leverage the concept for your email-gathering efforts. Turn the collection of emails into a game where customers get caught up in the competition. This can be as simple as setting a fishbowl on the counter where visitors to your establishment drop their business cards (which typically include email addresses) for a chance to win a prize. Or, you can stage a competition, such as a video-making contest, and require contestants to provide their emails in order to participate.
  9. Make your emails engaging and effective. Delivering quality content to email inboxes is a good way to encourage subscribers to help you grow your list by sharing your content with others. Emails that entertain, or those that offer something appealing and exclusive, are shareable. Learn the basics of great emails, like email personalization, killer subject lines, and words that sell.
  10. Inspire signups with a free, must-have tool. It takes a little more work, but creating a must-have tool and offering it for free download in exchange for an email signup is a great way to build both your email list and your brand’s reputation. For example, if you operate a lawn-care service, offer a free online calculator that tells users how much water, sun, and fertilizer common plants need throughout the summer. Tax accountant? Create and offer a free eBook on everything people should know about tax deductions. This type of tactic gives consumers something for free, creates an association in their mind between your business and useful information, and helps grow your email list.
  11. Grow and improve your list by polling current subscribers. Building an effective email list isn’t just about adding names to it. You also need to be able to segment it and refine it, so that you know your marketing message is reaching the right people at the right time. You can begin doing this by sending out a survey email to current subscribers. Ask them what you’re doing right, what you could be doing better, and what they’d like to see from you by way of new products and services in the future. Reward their responses by offering a discount or other exclusive promotion to those who reply.

Building an email list takes time, creativity, and patience, but it’s a critical step to ensuring your email marketing is effective. It’s also important to remember that an email marketing list is a living thing — it should grow and change over time as your business builds strong relationships with new and existing customers.

The top 20 places your business needs to be listed online

Gone are the days when a business laid down an annual sum to have its information listed in the Yellow Pages.

These days it’s crucial for small businesses to instead prominently list themselves in multiple online directories. Consider this, four out of five consumers in the U.S. now use search engines to find local businesses. Perhaps more importantly, 50 percent of those conducting local searches by smartphone visit the business in question within the same day, and 18 percent move forward with a purchase that day. To make sure your business is found, we’ve outlined the top 20 places your business needs to be listed. And we’ve even added a few lesser-known directories as a bonus.

What to include in your online business listing

Google research shows customers most frequently seek company hours, product information, business location, and directions. Many also put great stock in online reviews by other customers, with 88 percent trusting these reviews as much as personal recommendations. Other studies point to searcher demand for coupons and special offers.

So how do you decide which search engine — or engines — to list in?

Google My Business

The Goliath of search engines, of course, is Google. So it’s no surprise when prioritizing which online listings to pursue, experts often recommend starting with the free-of-charge Google My Business (GMB). After all, Google far outperforms every other search engine, logging an average 7.8 billion searches per day last year.

One of the greatest benefits of GMB is its listing of your business’s exact location on a mobile-friendly map — a huge boon to the 1.3 billion smartphone users expected to populate the U.S. by 2020.

“You will be far more visible to the vast majority of users of both Android and iPhones searching for businesses within a 5-kilometer radius,” Google advises, pointing to the SEO edge the tool provides in promoting small, local businesses over more generic corporations. “Local searchers do not want to be constantly bombarded with the same old big names that may or may not truly offer the service or product they are seeking.”

GMB consistently shows up high in online searches, boosts your website’s SEO rankings to optimize traffic, posts reviews from your customers, and allows you to include in your profile printable coupons, special offers, videos, images, opening hours, preferred payment methods, and other meaningful information. Its Analytics function also allows you to track who’s searching for you and what other sites they’ve visited. The free and easy registration process for GMB is available here.

Twenty other relevant directories that could increase exposure for your business include:

  1. Bing Places for Business: Only Google outpaces this free Microsoft product in visits, and you can add multiple business locations, photos, videos, and more during your fast, free, and easy registration. Because Bing is the default search engine for desktop and tablet versions of Windows 8, some tablet, desktop, and laptop owners opt for Bing over Google. Enroll here.

  2. Yahoo Local Listing: Ranking third next to Google and Bing, Yahoo’s service draws millions of searches daily. Build beautiful emails: VerticalResponse’s new editor makes it easy

Our new email editor gives you more freedom to change the layout and individual design elements of your campaigns. To introduce all of the updates and help you start sending emails today, we’ve created a series of how-to guides. In this edition, we look at three exciting tools that will boost the visual impact of your campaigns — templates, image and graphics libraries, and the in-app image editor.

Template gallery

The template gallery is where you find pre-made designs for your emails. Choose from different types of emails such as announcements, newsletters, basic emails, coupons, and more. But to give you as much creative freedom as possible, there’s also the option to upload your own HTML template or start building an email from scratch. All the templates you’ll find in the app are responsive, so your emails will look just as good on a mobile phone or tablet as they do on a desktop computer.

Once you’ve chosen an email template, hover over it and press Continue.

Editing the color of your template

Some of our email templates have coordinating colors to highlight your email’s content, but you can also add your own color to the templates. To change the color of an individual row, click the row you want to edit, then select Color to the right of the row.

To change the color of every row, click the Page Style tab on the left sidebar, and select your color preference under Theme Row Color. In this tab, you can even edit the page’s thickness, border radius, shadow width, and more.

You can change the background of the template by selecting Page Style and then Background. Here you’ll be able to either choose from one of 10 predefined swatches, or enter a color code to use a specific color. In the example below, we’ve changed the background from white to brown.

You also have the option to choose a background image if you want. However, it’s important to note that some of your subscribers’ email programs may block background images. If this happens, the default will be white.

Image and graphics library

If you lack the resources or budget to spend on professional photography or graphic design, we’ve got you covered — the new editor has a large and diverse library of eye-catching images to choose from.

Adding stock images

To access the stock image library, click on an image content block in your email. A blue border around the content block will indicate that it’s selected. Once you’ve done this, you’ll see an image editing menu on the left sidebar. Click the Replace button.

This opens a new window, presenting you with four options: Upload Your Own Image, Browse Free Stock Images, Browse Free Graphics, and Browse Saved Images. Click Browse Free Stock Images.

Once you’re in the stock image library, you can use the search bar in the top left corner of the page to find the perfect photo for your email. From restaurants and clothing to landscapes and animals — whatever you’re looking for, you’re bound to find a great photo that complements your content.

After you’ve clicked on your selection, click the Import button to add the image to your email.

Adding graphics

If you want to add a visual element that is more illustrative — as opposed to a photograph — we have a wide selection of graphics.

After you’ve clicked Replace in the image editing menu, click Browse Free Graphics.

One again, use the search bar to find the graphic that fits best with your email. You’ll notice that all of the graphics are black. This may be fine in some circumstances, but if you want the graphic to match your business logo or email template, for example, you can change the color using the color picker at the top of the page.

After you’ve made any color changes and clicked on your selection, click the Import button to add the graphic to your email.

In-app image editor

Now there’s no need to use expensive photo editing software or waste time editing your images in another app. The new VerticalResponse email editor has everything you need to get your images looking exactly the way that you want them to. Not only can you resize, crop, rotate, and adjust how dark or bright your photos are, but you can also add fun embellishments like frames, filter effects, and stickers.

After you’ve either uploaded your own image to your email or imported one from the image library, you can access the in-app photo editor by clicking on an image content block in your email. When you see the image editing menu on the left sidebar, click the Edit button.

Once the photo editor pops up, you can spruce up your image by clicking any of the icons on the toolbar.

After you’re satisfied with the adjustments or edits you’ve made, click the Apply button to make the changes stick. Clicking Cancel will reverse all of the adjustments you’ve made and allow you to exit out of that tool.

If you click Apply, but decide that you’re unhappy with the change you’ve made, you can click the “undo” arrow on the bottom left corner of the image editor. Alternatively, click the “redo” arrow beside it to re-apply the previous edit.

When you’ve made all of your edits and are satisfied, click Save.

Our new editor makes creating and sending professional-looking email campaigns faster and easier than ever before. Find out more about the editor update here.
