Become a Showrunner Webinar Recap

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of hosting a webinar with podcasting expert Jerod Morris. The goal was to give listeners an introduction to podcasting and actionable tips for developing their podcasting strategy.

Check out a quick recap below and be sure to catch Jerod at our ASCEND Digital Marketing Summit in October.

What is a podcast, exactly?

We learned that the term podcast can have a different meaning for different people. The term is often used generally and can be limiting. Technically, a podcast is a file that can be consumed on demand. This can be an audio file, but can also be another file type, such as video. Jerod views a podcast as a single episode, and a “show” as a recurring regular series that are organized around a big idea, that are geared towards entertaining, educating, or inspiring an audience.

Why is now a great time to get started?

Podcasting has been around for many years, but the demand has increased over the past year, or so – and it appears that it’ll just keep growing. The sooner you get out there and plant your flag, the better. There’s no better way to build a connection then to get your voice inside someone else’s head.

Some popular formats that first-time podcasters should consider are a one-on-one interview, a monologue or a conversational-style podcast with multiple speakers. There are also highly produced narrative-based podcasts, like This American Life. Choose the format that you are the most comfortable starting with.

Build your platform

One mistake that many podcasters make is that they don’t have a platform when they start their podcast. This is where you’ll start directing traffic from the podcast back to assets that you own, such as your blog or your email list.

Have no fear

Many people don’t start a podcast because they have a fear of being non-technical. To kick off a great show, all you need is a lot of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. There are many resources on YouTube or courses that could be taken to help achieve a decent sounding show.

Create a connection

One awesome piece of advice: Create a connection with your listeners online the same way you would offline. Remembering that you’re creating content for real, individual people, not just a massive audience, will help you create connections that will lead to a massive fanbase.
